A Sunset Scene at Lake Blackshear
"Life on The Lake," 24" x 36" Oil on Canvas
A fabulous opportunity arose to paint Lake Blackshear for a branch of a locally owned business. The painting will hang in the lobby of this branch in Cordele, Georgia and I was ecstatic about getting to work. Meeting with my clients, taking the photos for the artwork and gathering preliminary sketches for the painting had me chomping at the bit to begin the actual brushwork of this large 24" x 36' landscape. We ended up choosing two photos, with a combination of the two for the final painting.
Since I was merging two scenes, I decided to paint a smaller 11" x 14" study of the scene to make sure I was happy with the choice of my palette and the imagery I wanted to convey.
Below is a photo of the smaller study.
I needed to bring in geese that are an often sight there and the marina of watercraft docked close to the main part of the lake. Also important was my choice of color and value, with a dominance of blues, violets, golds and russets as that particular time of day. The water also was a challenge: placid in the background but rippled and undulating in the foreground. Not too choppy but obviously moving from the weekend's traffic of boats and jet-skis carrying lake lovers.
The final result (shown at the top) was I hope very representative of life on Lake Blackshear, complete with a title saying just so. Life is better at the lake, right?
