Harvest Still Life in Pastel
"Harvest Still Life," 16' x 20" Pastel on Panel
With the fall weather finally upon us I couldn't resist painting a still-life from my trip to the pumpkin patch. Thrown in the mix were a few gourds, my antique farmhouse pitcher full of sunflowers, a scattering of twigs heavy with berries, a Granny Smith apple, and some beautiful, huge maple leaves I'd collected from a nearby tree.
I haven't painted in pastels in awhile. It was wonderful to hold those soft stubs in my fingers again. To feel them glide across the sandy board was a delight; I'd missed my chalky friends. In fact, I believe I was so taken with my fondness for the medium that my painting drew its first breath before I even began sketching it in.
And just like that, I was done. Sometimes that happens. I get so caught up in the moment of my painting it is like a trance of some sort. I'm transported to this other place in my head and time stands still. I look up and hours have passed. Not just a few, sometimes five, six, seven, even eight. And at the end of such a creative session I am spent with such a feeling of happiness and exhaustion it can last for days. What a better way to represent my favorite season, than with a burst of color to echo the foliage outside?
I was fortunate to sell this painting quickly and to a client who I know will appreciate not only my artwork but also the process to which it was created. Happy Fall everyone!
