Painting 2nd and Main

“2nd and Main,” an 8” x 10” oil on canvas panel. Sold.

Street by street, building by building, I'm painting the town red ... and blue and green and any other color I squeeze out of a tube and onto my palette. When the weather is nice and mild and sun is not too bright or the weather isn't too inclement, you can find me painting outside.

But this was not the day to do it. I started at the intersection of 2nd and Main, right at the top of the hill where the Fun Channel station is on my left and the now vacant, used to be Roddenberry's and then the Coastal Lifestyle was at my right. However, the skies quickly grew darker, and rain began to fall.

And there I was, painting in my car. Using a makeshift easel and palette setup-- and old shoebox with a built in lid, to hold my panel and paints. Don't knock it-- it works in a pinch. My painting easel is too bulky and long to use inside my little Altima, so I improvise.

I was able to flesh out most of what I needed, and knew I couldn't finish an entire painting in my car or the rain. I didn't want to use the grey skies, so I did paint in a beautiful cerulean blue with clouds. I was happy with the result (see below) and resolved to finish the rest back at the studio.

The final painting (located at top) was a great little Plein - Air that I was happy to add to my Downtown Collection. Wonder what my next location painting will be?
