Painting a Relic and An Upcoming Sale

Not long ago I had the pleasure of painting buried treasure for a client. Ok, maybe not the treasure that reality show treasure seekers hunt. Or pirates. But buried treasure like this is much more valuable. Relics from days gone by, like an old homeplace or antiques with special memories, that is the real treasure. This particular relic was an old water pump, long abandoned at the client's husband's homeplace. Semi-buried in a field overgrown with vines and wildflowers, it was an artist's dream to paint. My imagination running wild with all the memories that it must have held, I loved creating every little vine tendril, every little rusted bit of the pump.

Set admist (what appeared to be) a grove of old pecan and oak trees, the lone pump took center stage. The grass was vividly spring green, neon, with its tender young shoots sprouting up and around old logs and viney patches of dirt. I could feel the cool spring air catching whispers of what once must have been. It was a little quiet, but not eerie. Just solemn and a might wistful.

This rusty relic had a manufacturer's name long worn off and maybe a dewy spider web or two. It was bone dry now, but it didn't matter if it was no longer functional-- it was the memory that was important. I'm so grateful the client saw its beauty in that memory and asked me to capture it on canvas. I'm so glad she saw this relic and knew it for the treasure it is still.
