September Storm
It all started with those clouds.
Luminous and dark, they were
moving forward with an amazing pace. The hayfield, freshly bundled, was neatly placed in rows. Ready to undo the farmer’s tidy handiwork, the storm was approaching. No cows lowed, even the crows did not caw. It was an eerily silent moment.
I took my camera and snapped a few shots. The crows at the original photo, were only flying around and had not rested on any bales. But I had seen crows perch before, waiting on storms. I had even seen once, a row of cowbirds facing side by side a pond before, like a troop of tiny feathered soldiers, in the beginning of a storm like this one. The wind was rustling up falling leaves and dust from the field and I could taste the earthy dust in my mouth. I could smell the rain before I felt the first drops. I heard only the whooshing of the trees in the back of the field.
It was a scene I was ready to paint, only when I was safe and dry in my studio.
