Why I Sell Note Cards from My Art
Over the past couple of years I’ve made notecards from my paintings. I’ve really enjoyed the process. Selecting which paintings to use, the texture of the stock they will be printed on, even the packaging that will encase them, has been so exciting for me. They’ve been pretty popular too and were some of the biggest sellers at a recent art show in which I was a vendor. I do the cards for many reasons, and here are some of them:
• They are affordable “art” for any budget.
Yes, they are reproductions but it opens the door for buyers who aren’t ready yet to invest in a painting, or even a giclee, to purchase art.
• They make great gifts.
My notecards sell well because they are a great size and price for a small gift. Perfect for the holidays. Blank on the inside, they are for any occasion.
• I enjoy encouraging the lost art of the “thank you” note and writing notes in general.
Many people find hand written notes more personal and heart-felt. Sure emails are great but something about receiving a hand-written card in the mail is so sentimental and old-fashioned. And so nice to receive an item in my mailbox that isn’t a bill or marketing offer. Really.
• If you’re an artist, notecards are a great way to advertise.
On the back of my cards, I have my signature and website. That’s it. Simple but effective. It invites customers and recipients to my website without me trying to twist their arm or get my foot in the door.
Notecards are pretty reasonable in my “marketing” budget too. I have an awesome local printer who prints all my cards. I buy my packaging online and assemble the stationary sets at home. It all takes very little time and is pretty painless. I truly wish I had started years ago doing these cards.
An artist has to do more than just the art. He/She has to be a strong marketer too.
But the investment of time and money is so very worth it.
And … I always keep some extra notecards for myself.
