Pretty in Pink
I had the pleasure recently of painting this lovely little girl. Isn’t she a doll? There’s many details in this pastel, so I tried to keep it fresh and painterly with some blurred edges and lively strokes amongst the patterns, and highlights of the model. From the viewer’s perspective, the little girl is absorbed into her book, so I wanted to create a sense of innocence and quietness too. I really enjoyed using my pastels and pastel pencils (sharpened to the tiniest point!) on the 11” x 14” pastel on panel. It’s a great size for any home, because it...
Egret in Paradise
This painting started out as a reference photo of the water lily pond at Paradise Lakes. And, as much as I'm a fan of overcast days, the original photo was just a little bit too much green and gray for my taste. I decided to brighten it up a bit with a bluer sky and clouds. I felt like it still needed something else, so I added two trees in the foreground with taller grass. Lastly, I found myself wanting a little bit of life added to it, so I brought in an egret. I see them often when I...
Painting Just A Pinch
I was thinking back to my vacation days last summer and skimming through my old photos looking for something to paint. And it almost jumped out at me just like last summer--this adorablelittle crab creeping amongst the washed up reeds. Originally he blended in very well with the “dirty” Jekyll Island sand and the seagrass, sticks, reeds, and shells, but his quick exit gave him away. In this photo, he’s poised to pinch any passerby. Especially an artist trying to zoom in for the perfect shot.I grabbed A sheet of Pastel Premier paper and tinted it a green-gray color. I quickly...
Why I Sell Note Cards from My Art
Over the past couple of years I’ve made notecards from my paintings. I’ve really enjoyed the process. Selecting which paintings to use, the texture of the stock they will be printed on, even the packaging that will encase them, has been so exciting for me. They’ve been pretty popular too and were some of the biggest sellers at a recent art show in which I was a vendor. I do the cards for many reasons, and here are some of them:• They are affordable “art” for any budget. Yes, they are reproductions but it opens the door for buyers who...
