Burning The Candle
Many people do not know that I’m not a “full-time” artist. I currently am employed as a graphic designer for a healthcare organization and paint when I can after-hours or on the weekends. Right now, it is the ideal solution to a steady paycheck and fulfilling my artistic passions. So, I have nights of working late or getting up at four to work on my art. Would I rather be a full-time fine artist with many hours of studio time awaiting me each day? Well, yes and no. ((Smile)). I live in a small town, which I absolutely love. I...
White Camelias
Some of my fondest Spring memories are of my grandmother’s camellia trees blooming in February. So heavy with blossoms, they carpeted the grass below. Beautiful double rows of pink and white, singles with golden centers and my favorite-- the fragile white sasanquas-- loomed over me as I played in her front yard. My mother grows them too. Her camellia trees stand under a group of pines and are currently just as heavy with blossoms as my grandmother’s trees once were. My daughter and I visited her recently and brought a basket to collect some for my house. Mama was tickled...
September Storm
It all started with those clouds. Luminous and dark, they were moving forward with an amazing pace. The hayfield, freshly bundled, was neatly placed in rows. Ready to undo the farmer’s tidy handiwork, the storm was approaching. No cows lowed, even the crows did not caw. It was an eerily silent moment. I took my camera and snapped a few shots. The crows at the original photo, were only flying around and had not rested on any bales. But I had seen crows perch before, waiting on storms. I had even seen once, a row of cowbirds facing side by...
The Blue Jay
This chirpy little fellow is happily surrounded by a mass of green and gold leaves. He flits around our dogwood tree all Spring and Summer. He and his mate have nested there. I painted him this November when I was longing for Spring and decided to paint a series of songbirds. The songbirds all sold very well and the only one left is my little Jay. Maybe Blue Jays get a bad rap. They are noisy and according to one buyer at an art show, “… are downright mean birds.” I don’t mind if the general consensus of blue jays is not...
Lazy Day
There was only a slight breeze that day. And the air was not stagnant but where from where I was standing had a muddy and earthy smell. It was no doubt because there was a pond in front of me and fields around me as far as the eye could see. A rich blue sky hung overhead, with swirls of clouds and a few crows flying about. It was perfect lazy day meant for respite from the colder weather, even though temperatures have been so very mild this winter. Two little ducks swam past me and I knew my...
